Über mich

  • Countries and cities have generally tried to encourage tourism—based on the premise that
holidaying visitors and the money they spend fosters economic development.
But in the age of overtourism, some popular destinations have
reached their limit. City centers are clogged
with avocado-toast-seeking hoards, historic sites are trampled
by selfie-stick toting visitors, and locals
are priced out by rising rents. That’s why so-called tourist taxes are cropping up
in destinations around the world. On the surface, these taxes—which
can be levied through the visa process, as a stand-alone
fee at the airport, or as part of your air or cruise ticket—are nothing new.
But historically, they have been used to fund tourism boards, hospitality trade groups, and destination marketing campaigns—the point being to bring more people into the country down the line.

the author of Overbooked: The Exploding Business of
Travel and Tourism, says the rise of these taxes suggests governments are starting to see that when it comes to tourism,
you can have too much of a good thing. ] last few years you have tourism
taxes that are going to controlling tourism," Becker said. Many of these measures aren’t simply centered on driving down numbers, but rather, attracting a "that lower impact, higher value
traveler," she said—one that is going to spend some money, in addition to using resources or crowding the destination. She cites the example of Venice, which for years did little to stem the tide of visitors displacing locals.

Now, in addition to a new tourist tax, the mayor has rolled out new measures meant to moderate tourists’ behavior and their effect on the city. So how do these taxes work to deter "low
value" tourism? 9) per person. About a week later, two cruise lines announced they would no longer be stopping in port, and two more lines followed suit in February. These cruise ship "day-trippers" don’t stay in a hotel or eat much at local restaurants (why would you, when you have an all-you-can-eat buffet waiting for you on board?), and are generally in and out of the destination quite quickly.

Though the tax—equivalent to the cost of a couple of beers—is relatively small, it was enough to put off extremely price-sensitive cruise lines. Not all these tourist taxes are meant to discourage tourists altogether from visiting. Bali—which has seen a huge uptick in visitors since it starred in Elizabeth Gilbert’s 2006 travel memoir Eat Pray Love—is one of the destinations mulling a tax. 10 fee will be used to preserve the environment and Balinese culture, which has been overrun with yoga retreats and acai bowl cafes. The Jakarta Post reports that officials aren’t trying to drive away travelers, mostly from Australia and China, but see this as a way for travelers to "contribute to
preserving" the local culture. Overtourism is often oversimplified, and it’s easy to blame the tourists themselves, or industry-disrupting companies such as Airbnb. But factors such as the rise of low-cost airlines, the growth of the cruise industry, and the failure of some governments to put constraints on growth are often underplayed, Becker says.

Short term visa free entry of thirty days is available to people holding passports of the following 11countries : Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Bali and you will need to show an onward of return ticket. 25 respectively. Once again a passport with more than six months left on it and a return ticket must be shown to get the visa. All of the countries noted below will need to contact the Bali embassy in their country to get prior permission to enter Bali.

Without a visa in advance you will not be permitted to go into the country. The countries are Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Cuba, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Apart from the short term visas that are available, there are other more long term visas that may be applied for before traveling to Bali. It is better to make an application for these visas in your own country, even though they may be a little more expensive they will generally be processed faster. You'll find a Balinese embassy in most countries that you can apply through.

Some of the commonest long term visas that people make an application for are, business visa, social-cultural visa, job visa and limited stay permits (KITAS). When you first arrive at one of the Bali hotels that you have selected to stay in contact your local government agency and tell them you have arrived and once again when you leave. This is recommended by all governments and it is just to ensure that you are safe and they will know if you haven't left on the due date. This way at least you'd be contacted in the event you forget when you're supposed to leave, you would be surprised how many times this occurs.

Fifty four year-old 'Hambali' — arguably Indonesia's most notorious terror suspect — has languished for almost 13 years in one of the most secret and isolated prison cells in Guantanamo Bay. Major James Valentine was assigned to defend Hambali more than a year ago, as the US laid formal charges against him. But he says it will be difficult — if not impossible — to conduct a fair trial in accordance with the US constitution or accepted standards on the rule of law. Instead, Major Valentine believes the Indonesian Government should "assert jurisdiction" over the case,
because Hambali is Indonesian and he's charged with offences that occurred on Indonesian soil.

The defence lawyer has been in Jakarta this month
to discuss Hambali's case with a team of Indonesian lawyers who defended three other
Bali bombers, Ali Gufron (Muklas), Amrozi and Imam Samudra, all of whom were executed.
He is accused of being the "operational mastermind"
of the then Southeast Asia based jihadist group Jemaah Islamiah (JI), that carried
out both attacks. Hambali's real name is Encep Nurjaman.
He was captured in Thailand in 2003 and spent three years in the US 'rendition and interrogation' program, more commonly known as the CIA's torture program.
For years the conditions of the program were a military secret, until a damning US Senate report in 2014 exposed some
of the techniques used by the CIA on terror suspects. Major Valentine says Hambali was kept in solitary
    confinement for long periods.

He was stripped naked and shackled nude during interrogations and was often starved or deprived of sleep.

He was regularly placed in "forced stress positions" for days at a time, with
his arms stretched above him or his feet tied to the
floor. He was also subject to a psychological technique known as
"walling", where a collar was put around his neck during interrogation, and his head
repeatedly slammed against the wall, depending on his answers to questions.
But the full extent of the torture has not been fully exposed.

Major Valentine says that poses an impossible dilemma for US authorities still hoping to bring Hambali to trial.
When the US made that decision to torture the individual for intelligence purposes, they arguably
lost their right, their authority to conduct a
trial later on. They can never let the world know what they did to him, so
how can they have a fair trial where they allow the production and the discovery of evidence to the defence.
If his age permits, we would like him to return to Indonesia,
and to be processed legally in Indonesia.

    The International Air Transport
Association (IATA) has expressed its objection to a plan of the Bali administration to impose a levy on foreign tourists that may be included in airline
tickets. The group, which represents more than 290 airlines accounting for 82 percent of total global air traffic,
has sent a three-page letter to Bali Governor I Wayan Koster regarding the plan. The Bali administration has drafted a bylaw on tourist contributions for the environment and cultural
preservation, which has been discussed with the Bali Legislative Council since December.

The island province, which is struggling to reduce plastic waste on and
off its shores, produces some 3,800 tons of waste
every day, only 60 percent of which end up in landfills.

The council and the administration are considering whether
the levy should be included in airfares or collected at special counters at the airport.
The first option is seen as more feasible with the help of airlines.

] levy," he said. Clifford said without adherence to the various ICAO principles, international aviation would become financially overburdened by excessive and unjust taxation, which in turn would significantly limit the economic and social benefits generated by air transportation. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), more than 6 million tourists arrived in Bali in 2018, increasing from 5.7 million in the previous year. Around 22.43 percent of foreign tourists last year came from China, while 19.26 percent visited from Australia. Others came from India (5.8 percent), the United Kingdom (4.7 percent) and Japan (4.3 percent). The Bali Council member leading the special team on drafting the levy bylaw, I Ketut Suwandhi, said the team would meet IATA representatives to discuss the plan. "We will have a meeting with IATA to discuss it.
We will try to find the best solution," said the Golkar Party politician.
